Western Pacific Heritage Unit
Title:  Western Pacific Heritage Unit
Description:  Pushing on the rear of ILADU-18 through Loma Linda, after having just waited on two westbounds, we see Union Pacific SD70ACe #1983, the Western Pacific Heritage Unit. This unit was debuted in Omaha, NE on July 30, 2005 to honor the employees of the former railroad, which had been merged into the Union Pacific. On this day, the unit was being chased by many local SoCal railfans, as it started that morning at East Yard, then headed out the Los Angeles Sub to Riverside, where it entered the BNSF San Bernardino Sub, to the Cajon Sub, where it switched over the Union Pacific's Yuma Sub at Colton Crossing. It is on its way to Dupo Yard near East St. Louis, IL.

Chicago and Northwestern Heritage Unit
Title:  Chicago and Northwestern Heritage Unit
Description:  Leading the customer's special SLBOA1-27 at Moorpark in the early morning run up the coast, Union Pacific SD70ACe #1995, the Chicago and Northwestern heritage unit, pauses to wait on a southbound Metrolink train, finally allowing me to get a shot, after two failed attempts at Chatsworth and the Moorpark stations. Having begun the morning at the International Container Transfer Facility in Carson (ICTF, railroad Long Beach), #1995 ran up the Alameda Corridor, to Metrolink's River Sub, recrewed at CP Main Street, and is seen here on Metrolink's Valley Sub. In about half an hour it will regain UP rails on the Santa Barbra Sub, as it takes the old SP Coast Line the whole way north to Oakland.

KTSG21-28 @ Montebello Way
Title:  KTSG21-28 @ Montebello Way
Description:  At 3:35 PM Union Pacific intermodal KTSG21-28 from Long Beach ITS to Global 2 in Chicago crosses Montebello Way after a brief stop in East Los Angeles to add GEVO #5741. While this train was waiting at East LA the crew of another eastbound intermodal said on the radio, "Those are some pretty eninges," and this crew responded something like "Don't you wish you had them."

The "George Bush 41" engine
Title:  The "George Bush 41" engine
Description:  Union Pacific SD70ACe #4141 is painted a'la Air Force One to honor the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush. The unit was unveiled to the former President at the opening of his library in October of 2005. The unit has been called the "Papa Bush," and is seen here on IMNLB-24, a Arkansas Intermodal Facility to Intermodal Container Transfer Facility train, travelling between Marian, AK and Long Beach, CA. While it's on the Alhambra Sub here, it's about to cross over to the Los Angeles Sub to head through East Yard (which sucked because I chased it down the Alhambra Sub and never saw it again).

Oil Cans enter the Alameda Corridor
Title:  Oil Cans enter the Alameda Corridor
Description:  The Oil Cans cross the Los Angeles River, having most of their power now entered the Alameda Corridor, and moving between East Redondo and West Redondo. The LA River was moving at a speed here that is hard to tell from the picture.

Pomona Montclair Road Switcher
Title:  Pomona Montclair Road Switcher
Description:  The LOB32 07, Pomona Montclair Road Switcher passes one of the cranes that is re-railing Watco's SW1500 and GP35 following a mishap the night before. The LOB32 is doing the switching that the Watco SW1500 was supposed to do before it ran into the GP35 and put them both on the ground (the GP35 sadly on its side).

UP 8433
Title:  UP 8433
Description:  QRVPX10, "The Phoenix" is gaining fast on the little Amtrak baggage scooter, as the super friendly Amtrak agent tries her best to keep her lead. This Quality Manifest originates at the massive J.R. Davis Yard in Roseville, CA and finishes up in the hemmed in downtown Phoenix Yard. This requires reversing direction on the Sunset route at Picachio to enter the Phoenix Line.

ACe with stacks
Title:  ACe with stacks
Description:  UP stacks head east at MP 21.10 on the Los Angeles Sub. Note the wires coming out of the signal box have been cut. This train was actually slowing for a stop at the Jack in the Box on Fullerton. Heck, they do serve breakfast 24 hours a day. According to the radio chatter, this train would end up swapping crews two more times before reaching Colton about five hours later. SD70ACe #8536 was delivered to the UP June of 2007.

Crossing the Santa Ana River
Title:  Crossing the Santa Ana River
Description:  Union Pacific statcks cross the Santa Ana River on the BNSF bridge as they move towards Colton Crossing. This multi-span girder bridge is a mishmash of girder styles, I'm assuming due it being upgraded at some point? This train had already crossed the Santa Ana River on the UP's magnificent arch bridge in Riverside. Prior to that, I'd seen it in Rowland Heights. Took it around five hours to go 36 miles. From radio chatter, I understood that it was re-crewed twice.
