8th Street Coach Yard |
Description: |
The Amtrak facility just north of Olympic Blvd is used to service the long distance trains that run into and out of Los Angeles Union Station (Sunset Limited, Southwest Chief, and Coast Starlight). Every train movement is announced here (I assume for safety's sake) on just about the loudest PA system I think I have ever heard. |

Sunset Limited under last SP signal bridge on Alhambra Sub |
Description: |
Train #2, the Sunset Limited, is only about five minutes late as it heads east through the iconic Southern Pacific signal bridge at MP 484.5 (just west of Valley Blvd). Just over the fireman's window you can see the hood of the Darth Vadar signal that will one day replace the spotlight and bridge. This particular run of train #2 actually made up time, arriving in New Orleans, LA two days later, an hour and one minute early, at 1:54 PM, 3/30/10. |

Nine hour late Southwest Chief |
Description: |
I actually had no idea that #3, the Southwest Chief, was running nine hours late and was completely surprised when it came by at track speed. Prior to reaching Trinadad, both P42s had lost their air compressors. A freight unit came in to rescue and took the train as far as Albuquerque, where the lead P42 (the rescue engine) was added. |

AMTK 156 |
Description: |
The Pacific Railway Society Special to Bakersfield was kind enough to stop on its way to Colton, actually allowing me to catch up to it, where I found another foam-fest (of many good folk) waiting at the iconic railfan bridge to shoot the broken arrow lead train. |
