UP & BNSF race in Cajon
Title:  UP & BNSF race in Cajon
Description:  BNSF Dash 9 and UP AC leads their trains in the same compass direction at Mormon Rocks. The BNSF train will head towards Bartsow, and possibly on to the Transcon, while the UP train is going up towards Tehachapi and the Fresno Sub, possibly on to Roseville. #5439 arrived on the UP on April 2005. UP calls CTE equipt AC4400CWs C44AC-CTEs, so to differentiate the ES44ACs (like 5439), they are called C45AC-CTE. In my experience, these are among the only units where railfans use the railroad designation, and not the manufacturer model. One UP rail has dubbed these GEVOs "Super Twinkies."

Crossing the Santa Ana River
Title:  Crossing the Santa Ana River
Description:  Union Pacific statcks cross the Santa Ana River on the BNSF bridge as they move towards Colton Crossing. This multi-span girder bridge is a mishmash of girder styles, I'm assuming due it being upgraded at some point? This train had already crossed the Santa Ana River on the UP's magnificent arch bridge in Riverside. Prior to that, I'd seen it in Rowland Heights. Took it around five hours to go 36 miles. From radio chatter, I understood that it was re-crewed twice.

Stacks and Mount Baldy
Title:  Stacks and Mount Baldy
Description:  UP stacks sit under the majesty of Mount Baldy. Just moments before I took this shot, the crew called in to request permission to enter BNSF trackage. They announced their position as Limonite (that's Limonite Road to the left), but I think this is actually Pedley over here, and Limonite is another mile or so east (typical railfan, thinking I know better than the rail, huh?). SD70M #4439 was delivered to the UP on August 2001.

UP stacks wait to enter the BNSF
Title:  UP stacks wait to enter the BNSF
Description:  Stacks sit in the Metrolink station waiting for permission to enter the BNSF and head east. The Metrolink station here is basically a platofrm with this funky looking roofs. Moments before I snapped this a private security guard approached me and asked me if I was a professional photographer or taking the pictures for my own enjoyment. Expecting to be kicked out either way I told her the truth, I'm an amateur taking pics for fun. She nodded that that was okay and left me alone.

CP Carson and Dolores Yard on New Year's Eve
Title:  CP Carson and Dolores Yard on New Year's Eve
Description:  Before the Alameda Corridor was built (the tracks beneath the cantalevered signal bridge), train watching at Dolores Yard was easy, but by 2002, the yard had been fixed so that getting shots involve stopping at a no stopping zone and pointing the camera out the window. Still, I managed to pull in briefly and get this shot of a warbonnet Dash 9 waiting its turn on the Corridor, while a UP SD9043MAC idles and a southbound UP stacker behind an SD70M gets ready to make it's run down into the Harbor.

Oil Cans at Broadway
Title:  Oil Cans at Broadway
Description:  The Oil Cans - OWPDO 23, pull through the signals at CP Main as they are about to pass under Broadway before making their stop at Main Street to change crews. The lashup consists of the three engines the Oil Cans brought north, two SLO helpers and two engines from work trains. From here, the SLO crew caught a ride home and the LA crew took the train down to Dolores.

UP 4502
Title:  UP 4502
Description:  The Oil Cans - OWPDO 23, pull through past the site of the LA&SL freight station and Myers Team Track. Usually powered by three units, this train has seven units due to both repositioning of power and a lack of "east" facing power on the westbound.

Oil Cans enter the Alameda Corridor
Title:  Oil Cans enter the Alameda Corridor
Description:  The Oil Cans cross the Los Angeles River, having most of their power now entered the Alameda Corridor, and moving between East Redondo and West Redondo. The LA River was moving at a speed here that is hard to tell from the picture.

UP 4666
Title:  UP 4666
Description:  An eastbound rail train waits alongside Dewey Avenue, shortly after the dispatcher has announced, "That's enough eastbounds, we've been doing eastbounds all morning. Time for some westbounds." This train answered back that it was tying down, and I discovered that it was under the authority of a lady hogger. These units have quite a varied seniority. #4666 was delivered June 2001, #3731 in February 1980, and #2222 as #6067 in March 1988.

UP MWCPD30 at Capitan
Title:  UP MWCPD30 at Capitan
Description:  UP MWCPD30 - "The Portland" waits along the 101 for a turn at Gaviota Trestle. This daily train was nicknamed the "PeeDee." It ran from West Colton to Albina, OR (Portland) carrying mostly empties. It was later replaced by the MWCPT (aka "The Portland" or "PT Cruiser"). Sadly, "The Portland" no longer runs up the Coast. Delivered back in May of 2001, 4668 is one of 1,462 SD70Ms on UP's roster. This one has the older, flat radiators, indicating that it is not Tier One compliant.

UP 4720
Title:  UP 4720
Description:  A Union Pacific unit fly ash train is seen from the Olympic Blvd bridge waiting on a clear signal to continue south to Pier F in Long Beach. Fly ash is the finely divided mineral residue resulting from the combustion of coal in electric generating plants. It is inorganic, incombustible matter present in the coal that has been fused during combustion into a glassy amorphous structure. It used to be released into the atmosphere, but is now collected and used to make cement.

IBRLCX 02
Title:  IBRLCX 02
Description:  A rare extra makes its way down the Saugus Line, passing through the Golden Valley part of Santa Clarita. IBRLCX 02 has quite an insteresting lashup, a very luck GEVO up front, one of the late model SD70Ms with a nose a little like an SD70ACe in the middle and, yes, in 2011, an SD40-2. Had a storeowner come out to ask me what I was doing when I took this shot. Told him all about being a railfan.
