BNSF 3111
Title:  BNSF 3111
Description:  A Radio Control driller pulls up to the abandoned Hobart Tower at San Pedro Junction. Sadly, the Burlington Northern GP50 is wearing a "Welcome to LA" paint scheme. This GP50 was delivered new to BN in July 1985. It was later derated to 2500 hp and reclassified GP25 in late 2006. The tower, built in 1926, was closed permenantly on April 15, 2002. It protected the crossing of the Union Pacific San Pedro Sub and the ATSF First District.

Malabar Switcher Y-LAC0112
Title:  Malabar Switcher Y-LAC0112
Description:  A pair of derated GP50s (with the embarassing moniker of GP25) begin their day at Malabar. One of them was spewing some kind of white smoke, indicating that something else was burning besides diesel fuel. This job work Malabar Yard on the north end of the former ATSF Redondo Branch, later the 4th District, and then the Harbor Sub. Today, the middle of this line is a rusted parallelgram, but Malabar still sees work every weekday morning.

Y-LAC0204 Yard Hopper
Title:  Y-LAC0204 Yard Hopper
Description:  BNSF's afternoon yard hopper job that runs from Malabar to Los Angeles Junction's A Yard to Commerce Yard skipped the last stop on this day as it picked up 49 loads from the Los Angeles Junction (mostlly hidden by those white buildings on the left there). The train is seen here pulling out of the LAJ and heading home to Malabar on a brief bit of Union Pacific trackage rights as it pulls across the LA River on LASL track next to Downy Road. The extra third diesel is likely a unit being leased to LAJ rotating out for maintainence.

Malabar Switcher at the 49th St Wigwag
Title:  Malabar Switcher at the 49th St Wigwag
Description:  The 49th Street Wigwag is probably the wigwag protecting the most track today (nine tracks) of Malabar Yard. The local works the yard and the area to the north and east. At one time, stacks and manifests came through here on the way to the Harbor, but today, the furtherst anything goes is about another 100 yards south. The train is about to stop to let the brakie off, before proceeding across the crossing.

Old Faithful or the Malabar Switcher?
Title:  Old Faithful or the Malabar Switcher?
Description:  There was some weird plume of white smoke (maybe unburned fuel) errupting out of one the Malabar Switchers GP25s this day. Very sad that nothing goes any further south than those engines are in this shot.
