MKT 627
Title:  MKT 627

MKT 627
Title:  MKT 627
Description:  Mixed freight N106 westbound from the Mlcak Road overpass, just east of San Felipe, between the Brazos River and Sealy. This is a westbound manifest on the Katy's Houston Sub. While the this track still sees trains they are locals only, as it has been cut off from Houston at Katy. SD40-2 #627 was part of Katy's 4th order for this model and was delivered four years earlier, in August of 1980.

IBRLCX 02
Title:  IBRLCX 02
Description:  A rare extra makes its way down the Saugus Line, passing through the Golden Valley part of Santa Clarita. IBRLCX 02 has quite an insteresting lashup, a very luck GEVO up front, one of the late model SD70Ms with a nose a little like an SD70ACe in the middle and, yes, in 2011, an SD40-2. Had a storeowner come out to ask me what I was doing when I took this shot. Told him all about being a railfan.

UP 4666
Title:  UP 4666
Description:  An eastbound rail train waits alongside Dewey Avenue, shortly after the dispatcher has announced, "That's enough eastbounds, we've been doing eastbounds all morning. Time for some westbounds." This train answered back that it was tying down, and I discovered that it was under the authority of a lady hogger. These units have quite a varied seniority. #4666 was delivered June 2001, #3731 in February 1980, and #2222 as #6067 in March 1988.

Streeter meet
Title:  Streeter meet
Description:  Westbound stacks pass an eastbound rail train, while paralleling Dewey Avenue in the Riverside "Quiet Zone." No horns allowed. The area behind my back here is all residential, with tidy working class homes. The westbound stacker has just come off the BNSF San Bernardino Sub and is now on home rails on UP's Los Angeles Sub, about to pass "Streeter." It's lead unit is one of UP's older ES44ACs, #5520, which was delivered June 2005. SD40-2 #3731 is a tad older though, having been delivered February 1980.

D&H "South Bronx Express"
Title:  D&H "South Bronx Express"
Description:  Delaware & Hudson 417, the South Bronx Express a Fresh Pond to Oak Point manifest rumbles through about 15 minutes after the sun vanished behind the Harmon shops. Three SD40-2s with specially modified pilots for the third rail and 44 MTYs make up tonight's train. They would get stabbed just a few miles further north at Peekskill. Thanks to alert of NH from the Hudson River Rail Lines YahooGroups for letting me know this train was on the way, or I'd have seen it through the windows of my commuter train back.

CR 6427 leading trailer vans at Ridgewood Jct.
Title:  CR 6427 leading trailer vans at Ridgewood Jct.
Description:  Two sparkling new SD40-2s take TV98 south towards Croxton at about Milepost 21 and with about 970 miles behind it. TV98 was the daily Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), mail, and UPS overflow train from Chicago 51st Street to New York. The SD40-2s were part of CR's first order for them and were only a couple months old at the time.

Conrail southbound at Radburn
Title:  Conrail southbound at Radburn
Description:  CR freight on Bergen County Line passing the Radburn depot. I think it's a good guess that this is an NY74. #6374 was part of the CR's first batch of SD40-2s and is only a couple months old here. Radburn was a fun place to railfan, the first planned community in America, with a safe depot and enough trains to keep one busy. Note the old EL truck parked to the left. Today there is a canopy over the platform and no more through freight.

CR 6480
Title:  CR 6480
Description:  An SD40-2 leads two U25Bs on an unidentified eastbound. Most trains chattered on the scanner through here and you knew exactly who they were. This one just silently appeared. The platform that is disappearing under the foliage to the right had been the outbound egress point for New York Central commuter trains, but hadn't seen passenger service in 22 years. CR 6480 was part of their third order for SD40-2s and arrived 11/78. Both U25Bs are ex New York Central, dating from 9/65 and 3/64.

CR 6505
Title:  CR 6505
Description:  A Conrail freight runs through West Park towards CP Penn, milepost 1.8 on the Fort Wayne Line. Picture was taken from a footbridge in the park about two blocks from Three Rivers Stadium. CP-Penn marks the junction of the Pittsburgh and Conemaugh Lines, becoming the Fort Wayne Line. Tracks 4 and 1 are the Pittsburgh Line; tracks 2 and 3 are the Conemaugh Line.
